J-L Homecoming 2007

Welcome to Homecoming 2007!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, FOOTBALL!
By: Brittney Kivel

Rain, sleet, and snow can't fight the Cardinal's hunger. This year's varsity football team is determined and ready to win every upcoming game. The senior boys are especially thrilled and ready to play hard for their last year of football. Senior Chris Rieck simply stated, "We should win every game this year." With determination high, these boys are set and ready to win, win, win! This year two sophomores, Joe Yeskey and Darren Dobbyn, were pulled up from J.V. Darren Dobbyn was happy and said, "Varsity is more challenging." Along with Joe Yeskey, he said, "It's a faster game." Both of them put forth a lot of effort and are pleased with the progress they've made. Before each game the football throws together pep talks and gets pumped for the big game. Sadly this year there are only four home games. Hopefully the crowds will be big and the cheers will be loud at the last two home games. This year, October 19th, 2007 is Parent's Night. The Varsity Cardinals are going up against their rivals, the St. Mary's Snowbirds. The Johannesburg-Lewiston community would like to encourage all parents, friends, and family to come and join the fun and root on the boys. Megan Clear excitedly said, "I hope we go to playoffs this year." With the support from the community the boys will play proudly, winning or not.

IT FLOATS?!

By: Francesca Infante

It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's a float! Here come the floats down the middle of the student body. Students atop the floats stand, smile, wave, and dance while music plays on. This 'mini' parade consists of four floats which all represent a class. The order for the homecoming parade starts with the freshman class and ends with the seniors. But the real story isn't about the parade itself, but about the floats. It's the students that assemble the float. The week before the homecoming game, students pick a class theme and the hype of float preparation begins. Soon after the meeting has been settled, students discuss where to meet (usually at a student's house that has a barn and/or plenty of open space), and plan on when to meet, which usually is on weekends. The hardest part for getting the float together is deciding how to decorate it. Students brainstorm and plan then let their ideas loose. Once the process of building the float gets underway, the students really start to enjoy themselves. When asked about last year's festivities, sophomore Emalie Huber said, "My favorite part of designing the float was splatter painting and getting into paint fights." After all the paint gets cleaned up, and all the hassle of building and designing are over, students that helped volunteer get to enjoy themselves while riding atop the float during the parade. Last years sophomore class won for having the best float, which was designed 80's style. Christina Winkelman, who accompanied Emalie Huber on top of the float, said, "My favorite part was dancing to "Beat It" (by Michael Jackson) on the float." Even though the process of coming up with ideas, making plans, getting materials, and building the float is all a lot of work, each class had a lot of fun. By seeing the floats cruise by in the parade, it is easy to tell the students put a lot of work into it. And even though the parade only lasts for a few minutes, it is always exciting to see what kind of ideas your classmates have come up with.

Spirit Week
By: Angel Houghton

It's been a tradition that every year during the week of homecoming, the high school students have Spirit Week. Spirit Week consists of a series of events. Monday through Thursday the Johannesburg-Lewiston students will have events that J-L will have to dress up whether it consists of Pajama Day to Class Color Day. On Friday the school will be asked to show their pride as they wear red, white, and black, followed by a pep assembly. The pep assembly on Friday will be for the students in 9th to 12th grade. It will take place in the high school gym and the students will be cheering on the varsity football team. Sure, parents all may be wondering, why does
J-L have Spirit Week? Spirit Week helps everybody get pumped up for the big game. The game is important to the high school students because it's before the Homecoming Dance. Last year during the week of Homecoming the students had several themes they could go by. The students one day could show up to school in their pajamas. The next day it was their class color. The students come up with some pretty interesting things. On Friday, October 12th, Johannesburg-Lewiston Cardinals will be playing against Atlanta and students will be asked to dress in the school colors for Spirit Week. So don't forget to wear red, white and black. When Dustin Proctor was asked what he thinks about Homecoming Spirit Week, he responded, "I think it's a good idea. It helps students enjoy school and keeps them coming back for more." Don't forget about Spirit Week. Get involved with your class and show some of that Cardinal Pride.

WHO REPRESENTS?
By: Jessica Sewell

Pick me! Pick me! Can I be it? Everyone hopes to be chosen to ride in the luxurious car, walk down the field in their fancy dresses or stunning ties all dolled up with every face in the crowd staring at them, getting announced over the loud speakers and being one of the best looking people on the field. For Homecoming two students, one boy and one girl, are chosen from each class to be the representative for their grade. One class meeting was held for each class and 12 reps were nominated to be the 2007 Football Homecoming Representatives. For the senior class there will be three boy reps and three girl reps running for king and queen. Tyler Smith said, "I think Brendan Chapman and Kaylie Bradley will be chosen for one of the pairs." Students will have the opportunity to vote for two senior reps when a ballot is passed out during school hours. Student Government will then tally up the votes and the results will be announced during the Homecoming Football Game. The Homecoming Football Game is going to be on Friday, October 12th and the Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 13th at the J-L High School. On Friday night during half time all reps will be riding in their chosen vehicle around the field. After circling, the reps will walk down the 50 yard line on the field. First the freshmen representatives followed by the sophomores and juniors. Lastly, seniors will walk out in pairs of two. After each rep is announced, the votes that were counted for homecoming king and queen will be announced while the reps are on the field. The king and queen will then be acknowledged again during the Homecoming Dance during the song all reps to share one dance with each other. Come and join us on October 12th to see who will be king and queen.
