TEACHER
APPRECIATION WEEK

5/5/08 - 5/9/08

The J-L Athletic Boosters next meeting is on Wednesday, 5/14/08 in the high school. At our meeting in March, the boosters approved the purchase of a set of high hurdles, pole vault padding, high jump and pole vault bar lifters for track, a softball pitcher protector net, and a basketball rebounder. Our current board will be stepping down at our June 11th meeting and we ask that anyone who is interested in being on the board and/or being a volunteer member, please come to both meetings. We also need volunteers to work concessions at baseball/softball games and high school and middle school track meets.

The Johannesburg-Lewiston Athletic Boosters run the concessions for track and baseball. If you are available to work concessions for one of these home games, please contact Debi Kearney 731-2040,
ext 235.

The Johannesburg Middle School students have amazed us yet again! Two weeks in April were dedicated to the annual Penny Drive Competition. The students receive positive points for any pennies that are in their advisory jar. The competition comes in when other advisory groups "bomb" the jars with silver coins, which are worth negative points. The advisory with the most points at the end gets the privilege of choosing the local charity that will receive the money raised. This year, Mrs. Wojtkowiak's advisory won the Penny Drive. The charity that will receive the donation is the Otsego County Food Pantry. We have received some matching funds from companies that students contacted. We wish to thank those companies for their generosity toward others. The teachers are always amazed at the amount of money the students raise! The bare shelves at the Food Pantry are a true indication of the tough times our communities are going through, yet these students give to others in such a tremendous way. The grand total for this year's Penny Drive was $813.00!! This does not include the matching funds! We will report the total donation after the presentation to the Food Pantry. Thank you to all of the students and their families for once again proving that a little school can have such a huge heart!

“Mini-Relay for Life” Please turn in any donations by 5/12 and permission slips by 5/16. Anyone who receives donations over $100 will receive a free “Relay For Life” t-shirt!

Children’s Bereavement
Network is a group of health care professionals and volunteers who created a grief forum camp for children to be held this year August 8th through 10th. Their goal is to provide a safe environment in which children can explore and express their grief. At camp, children learn healthy grieving habits and positive coping skills. They relate to other children w/similar feelings and confide in a teen buddy, who listens to their needs and concerns. Other activities: horseback riding, swimming, campfires, and crafts to enhance their experience. For more information or an application, please contact our school’s counselor, Sandy Bandt, at 731-2040 ext 234.
