GIRLS’ TRAVEL SOCCER

By Meridith DeLuca & Elise Huber

Did you know that there is a travel soccer team combined of Joburg, Lewiston, and Gaylord girls, ages 11-14? What? You wanted to play? Sorry, the team is full! There are 16 fantastic soccer players that make up the team, the Tsunamis! Most girls have been playing since they were 5, but for some, this is a learning experience. Travel soccer is different that recreational leagues, such as the one in Gaylord, in that the team has to go different places to play games. Also, the games are on weekends with two games each Saturday. In a recreational league, you have a game on weekdays and a game on Saturdays. There are also some very big tournaments, with teams from all over Michigan, and one from Canada. The team is planning on going to the Traverse City tournament on Memorial Day weekend, and the Gaylord tournament on June 7th and 8th. The team consists of Elise Huber, Meridith De Luca, Becky Michael, Amanda Nickert, Tiffany Nickert, Abby Schlicher, Julia Nieman, Kayla Beauregard, Jackie Ives, all from Lewiston, one player from Joburg, Lexi Morton, and from Gaylord, there is Dakota Pelach, Morgan Pelach, Jessie Bilyea, Stephanie Weir, Nicole Wehner, and Jessica Smith. The first games are on April 26th in Gaylord. You should come check it out and CHEER THE TSUNAMIS ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

NCAA TOURNAMENT

By Jacob Newell & Tristan Munger

This year was a great NCAA men’s basketball tournament. There were some great games! It was the first time all the number one seeds made it to the final four. The final four and the number one seeds were Memphis, North Carolina, Kansas, and UCLA. Memphis beat UCLA first, then Kansas came with a major upset to beat North Carolina. Then, in the championship game, there was Memphis vs. Kansas. It was a back and forth game. Memphis pulled ahead, but the Kansas put up a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send it into overtime. Finally, Kansas won 75-68 for their 1st championship in 20 years. In the end that was one of the best games we’ve seen in a long time!

TALENT SHOW

By Maxine Trotter & Marissa Virden

Everyone was bragging about Tuesday night’s talent show. Did you see it? All of the fun we have at school is now available at night! The talents at Lewiston school were just so outrageous, we couldn’t keep them bottled up! Every year Lewiston school has a talent show, but this year we had two, one to show the many talents to the students and one available to the working parents to see at a more convenient time. We give a special thanks to Mrs. Taratuta for putting on our 6th annual talent show!!!!! There are about 30-40 people each year and about 20-23 acts. Start thinking about your talent for next year’s show!

SPRING BREAK…
…is over

By Dillon Freeman, Caitlin Priest, & Jon Mardyla

Spring break is unfortunately over. Now, we’re back to school! So we ask people, how was your spring break? Meridith said, “My spring break was boring.” Kyle said, “It was awesome! I sat around and did nothing all break!” Nikki said, “I was bored every day of spring break. It was terrible.” Caitlin said (not like anyone cares), “I was bored. My brother annoyed me the whole time.” Jon says, “I was very, very sad because my new guitar hero 3 didn’t come.” Dillon says, “I had fun. I went to my sister’s. We watched shutter in the theaters, and went to the mall.” So, now that break is over, its time to get back into the habit of homework…or just sit around and pretend it’s still break. Whichever you prefer!

SCHOOL STRESS?

By Tom Miller &
Alex Black

Many kids in school today are either very stressed out or they are afraid to come to school for a variety of reasons. Even students at Lewiston feel this way. An anonymous girl in 7 th grade just dislikes the work and thinks it’s tiring. A 3rd grade girl says, “I hate leaving (my parents), and the bus ride scares me.” Some of those kids also worry about bullies. We ask those kids to tell a responsible adult about those bullies. Whenever you’re feeling stressed, just try to relax, take a deep breath, and talk to an adult about it. You could also do some thing mind relaxing, like reading or drawing. Do whatever it takes to help relieve stress at school!

GIRLS’ TRACK

By Abby Schlicher & Hailey Reasner

The Girls’ track team has been practicing hard for their upcoming meet. They haven’t been able to practice outside until this week because of the snow. The events are relays, sprints, distance runs, and for the field events there is shotput, long jump, high jump, and pole vault. The first meet is Wednesday, April 16th. It is a home meet starting at 4:00pm, unless the snow is still on the track. We are competing against Gaylord Saint Mary’s, Onaway, and Mancelona. The next track meet is at Central Lake on Tuesday, April 22nd. It will be against Mancelona and Forest Area. The first major invitational meet is at Inland Lakes Middle School on May 1st. The coach of the middle school girls is Mrs. Peppin. When asked if she thinks her team is ready for the first meet she said, “Not yet, because we haven’t practiced outside. Hopefully, by the end of this week, we will be better prepared.” She’s been coaching for five years and enjoys it very much. “I enjoy seeing the improvement over the course of the season in my team.” commented Coach. The track team will be working very hard for the next couple days and would like you to come join the crowd to cheer on the speedy track team next Wednesday!
