BLACK RIVER WATERSHED WALK 2011
September 29th - October 1st

Cold, wet, and a ton of fun! This year 6 students went on the Watershed Walk:
Gary Berger, Sarah Hofer, Kelsey Hardy, Allison LaPointe, Chloe Johnston,
and Elise Huber.

We started at the beginning of the Black River and made our way to Lake Huron.
Even though hours of canoeing in the rain we still had a great time.
We saw elk and other wildlife, went through obstacles of the river,
and we were dropped down 15 feet in the Cheboygan Locks.
Each student performed chemical water tests at 13 different testing sites.

The weather didn't stop us from having a blast and we thank Mr. Kennedy
for taking us on such a wonderful trip!

What is a Watershed?

A watershed is the area of land that catches rain and snow and drains or seeps into a marsh, stream, river,
lake or groundwater and eventually even to the ocean.  Any area or connected that experiences precipitation of some sort is a watershed.
Watersheds can be small, from acres to hundred or even thousands of square miles.
Watersheds can be subdivided into smaller watersheds or "sub basins", which collectively flow together to form larger watersheds and "basins".
Some watersheds extend across county, state, and even international borders.
Just as creeks drain into rivers, watersheds are nearly always part of a larger watershed.
